One of the hardest parts of getting productive work done – finishing a big project for your job, building a new business or starting a blog – is just finding motivation to work to begin with.
This article is a little blunt, a little in-your-face and a little personal. But I wrote it because I’ve been in productivity slumps before and sometimes we just need a kick in the mental butt to motivate us to get going.
Here are 5 things to remember each and every day for finding motivation to work:
1. No One Is Going To Do It For You
One of the hardest lessons I learned as an adult is if I don’t do something, it isn’t going to get done. Mom isn’t going to do my laundry, dad isn’t going to bring me to the park, etc. etc. Same goes for anything else you want in life.
If you don’t do it, it isn’t going to happen. Period.
There is only so much planning and thinking and self-talk you can do. You can come up with the greatest business idea in the world, but if you don’t do anything about it, it’s completely useless.
Stop planning and start doing.
2. The Beginning Sucks – But It’s Worth It
Making any adjustment to your life – like building a new business or doing work on the side to build your income – is difficult in the beginning. I still remember the first time I had my heart broken years and years ago. I was having a terrible time going through it, and one of my best friends explained it to me like this:
“It’s going to be a big adjustment and it’s going to suck for a while. But after some time, you’ll get over her, get back to normal and be better for it.”
The same can be said about starting a new business or side hustle – it’s a big adjustment and it will take time. But once it’s a part of your life and you’ve adjusted to it, it will feel like a normal part of your life and you’ll be much better for it.
Which leads to my third point…
3. You Will Be Better For It
Don’t spend too much time doing this, but take 5 minutes to think about yourself 6 months from now if you continue down your current path.
Where will you be? What will you look like? And is that what you want?
Without any motivation, you probably won’t be hitting your goals or improving your health and lifestyle. But if you start taking action toward a better life and stick to it, you will be better for it in the end.
You’ll feel better and you’ll enjoy life more when you work up the motivation and keep it going. Trust me.
4. You Will Impress Yourself And Your Friends/Family
When was the last time you did something that impressed yourself or others?
As children, our lives were filled with much more encouragement and acknowledgement. We behaved well or learned new things and got praised from our parents, teachers or relatives. And it felt great. But as you get older, there’s less and less of that – and to be honest, it kinda sucks.
Especially if you live in a bad household or negative work environment, you may not get much positive reinforcement and it may take a toll on you emotionally. Starting a successful business or side hustle will lead to results that will impress you and those around you, leading to more confidence and a happier life overall.
It won’t happen overnight, but there’s no better feeling than seeing results after being committed to something for a long time and the effort finally paying off.
5. Awake Your Inner Animal
Sure, humans have evolved over the years and we live in the most advanced time in history. But just a few hundred years ago we didn’t have any technology and were forced to hunt, build and care for ourselves and families.
We were not designed to sit in offices all day, working day in and day out for a big corporation – so get up, run around, create something awesome for yourself and awake the inner animal inside you.
Always remember that if you want anything in life – more money, more friends, a healthier lifestyle – you have to go out and get it. Reading and planning will only get you so far.
You know the benefits to building a better lifestyle and that it won’t be easy, but it will be worth it in the end. Use these keys to finding motivation to work, wake up that inner animal and go crush it!
